This type photography mightn’t be anything like Travelshoot’s photography style but that doesn’t mean we don’t love it! Tony Scott’s photography is far from smiley shots under the Eiffel Tower or walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, instead, he gets up and close with great white sharks, manta rays, and whales on a daily basis! We recently had a chat with him about his photography and experiences with photography in the water! Check out what he said below!
How long have you been taking photos for?
Growing up in England my first real job was as a lab assistant to a friend who was an advertising/commercial photographer, one weekend I was allowed to take home the Pentax camera kit and 6 rolls of 35mm black and white film, that was the day I was hooked, shooting an old railway station near my home, broken windows, railway tracks, bridges etc… I was about 16 at the time and I don’t think that a camera has been out of my hand for more than a few days since.
What’s your favourite animal to photograph?
I love taking Photos of all kinds of wildlife, especially marine life, Sharks, Dolphins, Sea Lions, Turtles, Humpback whales, but my favourite of all is the Manta Ray - so graceful.
Where is your favourite location to shoot?
I have been fortunate to have visited many places around the world, The Maldives, The Soloman islands, Java, Cambodia, New Zealand, Lord Howe Island and much more. But Australia is by far my favourite, from the desert, Mountains Rainforests and the ocean, therefore Lady Elliot Island on the Southern end of the Great Barrier Reef is my favourite - its array of marine life is second to none.
What is your favourite thing about water photography?
My love of the water goes back to my childhood, summer holidays spent in Cornwall SW England. Every time that you venture into the water you are really not sure what you may see, I love scuba diving, free diving, shooting waves at sunrise and sunset, as I said you are never disappointed as its constantly changing. I have had schools of Trevally swim past me chased by a Dolphin just on sunset, sea lions playing like puppies, turtles looking into my mask, it's endless and always different so I never get sick of being in the water.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve done with photography?
Wow that’s a huge question, however earlier this year I did a shoot at the Queensland Institute of Sport Swimming facility in Brisbane,I was to shoot in the current pool some Tri-Athletes training wearing some new Technology wetsuits by Volare,you think that would be easy,no I had to be weighted down and roped to the end of the pool,water housing flash unit, hold your breath and hope to get the shot. You be the judge…….
Where is your next photography destination?
My next photography location is in Tasmania - we are planning a 4 to 6-week tour of the Island.
What’s one animal you’ve always wanted to photograph?
I would love to visit Africa and Antarctica and photograph the abundance of wildlife in those two continents.
